Montreal - A review...
Date: Jun 01, 2004 - 06:55 PM

After a few days in Toronto, we ventured into Montreal, the gateway to the french speaking province of Quebec. 6 hours from Toronto by train, was nothing for us!!

We stayed at the HI Auberge de Jeunesse on Rue Mackay. It is a beautifully restored old house with excellent amenities, located just up from the train station and 2 blocks from the main streets of Rue Ste. Catherine and Rue Crescent, makes it an ideal base to explore old and new parts of Montreal.

On the Saturday, we headed into the old part (Vieux Montreal), which feels like you could be in Paris. Once we'd remembered bits of our GCSE French, we were fine.

At the Notre Dame Basilica, there was a wedding.on ...

.... , so we were unable to go inside. Apparently, this was the biggest religous building in North America when it was completed in 1829.
In the evening, we went to the pictures and saw 'Envy'. After that we went up Rue Crescent (the main bar street) and had a few beers in 'London Pub'.

Sunday was a gorgeous day and we went up to Mont Royal. A little mountain, that the city takes it name from. At the top, you're rewarded with superb views over the city.
We plonked ourselves under a tree and read a book and just chilled.

We had an early train to Quebec the next day, so we had an early night and packed up our things.

All in all a pleasant stay in Montreal.
If anyones thinking about moving out there - get a job as a signwriter. All the signs are in French and English, so there must be twice as much work for you!

Take care,

Lee and Julie xXx
