Cameron Highlands [ Sunday 6th February - Tuesday 8th February 2005 ]

The Cameron Highlands is renowned for it's cool climate and is home to a number of tea plantations. Apparently, they also do cracking tea and scones so we just had to go.

"Getting there is half the fun" as Clark W. Griswald once said and that's certainly true about getting up to the town of Tanah Rata in the Highlands.
Located high up in the hills, it took us over 2 hours to do just 60 Kms through windy roads and hairpin bends.

The town of Tanah Rata has a high Indian population who were brought over to hand pick the tea. Nowadays, it's all machinery to do the work and the Indian's have opened up restaurants along the main street.
We had a fantastic tandoori chicken set meal for just 6 Ringgits (90p) at Restoran Thanam.

Our first food though, was a delicous Devonshire Cream Tea. A pot of Boh tea and two of the biggest scones we've ever seen complete with freshly homemade strawberry jam and clotted cream. Mmmm!

The following day we went on a guided tour around the Highlands. First of all, stopping at the Rose Centre which had a massive selection of different roses and a load of other flowers including some very big sunflowers (Julie's favourite flower).

After this we went to a strawberry farm, where I had strawberries with chocolate sauce which although nice, where very sickly. Joo opted for a lighter strawberry milkshake.
From here we went to a butterfy farm that also had a collection of bugs and beetles, including a Rhino beetle and a scorpion. I was ok around the beetle but was not keen at all with the scorpion.

A honey bee farm was next, which was pretty rubbish and then it was onto Sam Poh Temple which was pretty cool..... well, as cool as temples can get.

On the tour you usually get to visit the Boh Tea Factory, but it's closed on a Monday for tours. Just our luck!

We were up early the next day for our trip back to Kuala Lumpur. The weather up in the Cameron Highlands was great - sunny and fresh but not too hot.
Like an English summer's day, if anyone can remember one of those!

Enjoy the pictures and check out that Rhino beetle and the scorpion..... ugh!
