Tennant Creek and Devils Marbles :: Friday, January 14, 2005 - 02:03 PM (GMT)

Australia

Monday 15th November 2004

Again on the road and we're heading towards Barkly Homestead. This roadhouse is the only place to get petrol for 260Km's (160 miles) and is also claims to be the most expensive in Australia at AUS$1.40 per litre (About 50p).

After filling up, we crossed into the Northern Territory where they have no speed limits. Joo wasn't impressed with this, but it meant we could get further and in less time. Travelling at around 160 Km/H, we were really eating the tarmac and pushed on until Tennant Creek.

We'd done 678 Kms today and after we'd had dinner, we flaked out and had a good kip.

Tuesday 16th November 2004

Feeling fully refreshed we made to the short drive south to Devils Marbles. Known as 'Karlukarlu' to the local Aboriginal people, these rocks are believed to be the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent.

The huge boulders are in precarious piles and are the granite remains of molten lava after several million years of weathering and erosion. There's some very strange looking rocks!

Just south of here is Wycliffe Well, which has the dubious claim of the UFO capital of Australia after many sightings. The roadhouse there also has the widest range of beers in the whole of Australia! No kidding, there must've been at least a 100 different beers from all over the world for sale. Maybe that's what attracts the UFO's?

Crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, we continued south down the Stuart Highway and into Alice Springs.

Enjoy the pix...
